Café Description
Globally we see an emerging trend of violence targeted at public-facing women and LGBTQIA+ people. This trend is related to the global increase of women’s participation in politics as politicians, activists, and reporters but also to the growing presence of anti-democratic and anti-gender forces. Journalists and media workers face physical and online attacks because of the stories that they tell. Civil society workers who work on gender and sexual rights issues receive threats of violence, attacks, and online abuse. Feminist politicians deal with unprecedented levels of misogyny in the form of cyberbullying and threats of physical violence, sometimes from fellow politicians. Members of academia who work on issues of gender, sexuality, and race also face online harassment and threats.
On November 20, in observance of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the Society of Gender Professionals (SGP) and the Co-Creating Inclusive Intersectional Democratic Spaces Across Europe (CCINDLE) will co-host a gender café on this important topic – the importance of analysing, exposing, and countering violence against women and LGBTQIA+ people in visible positions. This is the 2nd in the SGP- CCINDLE series of gender cafes tackling anti-gender movements and constructing feminist responses.
